How the whale sharks came to Botubarani

In 2016 a shrimp processing factory on this coast began discarding shrimp heads and shells into the sea. A few weeks later, locals counted 26 whale sharks feeding in the area.

They have kept returning ever since, so you can meet them close to shore, a short trip from your room.

What to expect

Early start

Whale shark dives run in the morning, usually around 7am, when the sharks are most active.

Shallow & calm

The sharks feed in shallow water, so snorkellers get just as close as divers.

Look, don’t touch

Keep your distance and never touch the sharks. Our guides brief you before every trip.

When to see themAll year round. Our dive season runs October to July.
